Local people say the monkeys are the real Kings of Mount Emei, which is true. They are incredibly clever – clever to be lovely, and clever to get food from tourists, mainly inhabit around Qingyin Pavilion, Hongyuping, Jiulongdong and Xixiangchi. It is a unique experience to visit the wild monkey kings if you are animal lovers. But honestly, monkeys are still monkey. They are not as friendly as you may think. It happens often that the monkey sway on the road, rob food and water. They may even rob your bags and throw into the valley. Below are some useful tips to help you protect yourself from the wild monkey:
Wild Monkeys in Emeishan
1. Do not carry things in hand while seeing monkeys;
2. Keep your pack on your back or be carried on your front chest;
3. Buy a bamboo pole at the foot of the mountain. Use the stick to scare off monkeys when they try to approach you;
4. Try not to touch the monkey especially the babies;
5. Keep your valuable possessions inside your pack while passing the monkey places;
6. Avoid making loud voice or scream if a monkey approaches you, loud voices will only provoke monkeys;
7. Do not eat food in front of monkeys;
8. If you want to feed the monkeys, only show the food you want to feed them. Anything else they see you have in your hands will be considered as food and they will snatch;
9. Don't open your pack/bag in front of a monkey. Monkeys may think you have food. Monkeys will snatch your pack;
10. If you are alone, try to have a stick with you to defend yourself.
