As a foreigner traveling in China, a lot of apps and online internet services that you are used to and use often at home are blocked/unavailable in China. These apps include FB, google(map, mail, search), whatsapp, instagram. If you want to stay connected on these apps please make sure you have a VPN on your phone before arrive to China to make sure these apps work while traveling in China.
A, sometimes when you buy package from your domestic phone data roaming provider (for using roaming in China) you should have no problem accessing these apps without problem but it happened before that it may unreliable or not work at all. Please have a backup plan by setting up a VPN especially when you need to use certain apps for working or have important things to do with access to these apps such as google mail.
B, Some VPN is not reliable please do make sure the one you bought works in China. And please make sure they don’t expire before you leave.
Most hotels in China provide free WiFi and it’s normally good.
Most international airport now provides SIM cards by the international arrival location.
