Aba Hongyuan Airport (AHJ)

Hongyuan Airport was built in 2014. It is located near Hongyuan in northern Sichuan, 38km south to the town of Hongyuan and 145km north to the town of Ma’erkang, capital city of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Prefecture. Hongyuan Airport is at the elevation of around 3500 meters. It is one of the highest airports in China. There are direct flights to Hongyuan from Chengdu up to 2016. It has scheduled flights generally from April to October each year. In winter the weather is too bad for the landing so will probably suspend its service.

Getting Around at Hongyuan Airport

At the airport there is no accommodations available, the nearest town is Hongyuan where you can find many hotels and hostels to stay for overnight. By driving to Hongyuan from the airport it is within 1 hour. From the airport you can also drive to Maerkang for 2.5 hours as well. From Maerkang you can start a trip to either Setar or Danba. From the airport you can also drive to Aba Xian for about 1.5 hours for 105km. And from Aba you can keep driving to Nianbaoyuze to Qinghai.

Taxis are available when there is flight arrival at the airport. The taxi from the airport to Hongyuan costs about 150 yuan according to the seasons. There are no airport shuttle buses available at present.

From Chengdu to Hongyuan there is one flight everyday but in winter it may stop due to the bad weather. From Hongyuan you can start a trip in Hongyuan to visit the Hongyuan Grassland and Ruo’ergai Wetland, Langmusi, and then visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong and fly out from Jiuzhaigou Airport. These airports can save days of time for a Jiuzhaigou Ruoergai trip for you.
