Dujiangyan Panda Base is located in Qingchengshan Town, about 18km from Dujiangyan City, 65kn from Chengdu downtown. North not far from the base stands the famous holy Taoist mountain Qingchengshan. A few kilometer south from the base locates the small ancient town of Jiezi.
High speed train
High speed train is the fastest transfer way to visit the Panda Base. There are usually 10 trains departing from Chengdu North Railway Station to Qingchengshan Railway Station from early morning around 7 AM to 9 PM. The train only takes about 40 minutes to get to Qingchengshan. From the railway station, travelers can take public bus or taxi to the panda base, which is only a short driving distance.
Our tip for you is to catch the early train in the morning so that you will have enough time for the volunteering program as well as have the best time to watch the pandas playing and eating because pandas are usually lazy in the afternoon.
Bus
Traveler can take bus from Chadianzi Bus Station which schedules a bus to Dujiangyan every hour. The bus usually takes about one and a half hours to arrive at Dujiangyan Bus Station from which travelers can take another public bus 112 to the Panda Base.
Self driving
Self driving is most recommended, and only takes about 1 hour to reach the panda base. The road is maintained very well, and directly leads to the gate of panda base. But you still have to depart early in the morning to avoid the traffic jam.
Dujiangyan Panda Base Tourist Map
Of course the most important thing to do in the base is to visit these cutest friends. The experience is quite different compared to visiting pandas in Chengdu Panda Base. Here the base is much large, and gives much private room for pandas to live and have fun. What make Dujiangyan Base impressive is its pleasant environment just like the wild habitats because the base is ideally established in a valley near to bamboo forest, which make it easy to prepare eatable bamboo for panda. Tourists who had been here usually were very happy to see the pandas living happily here.
Even though so far there are only about 20 pandas living in Dujiangiyan Base, but several of them are really bright and famous stars. You have to know two of them - Pan Pan and Tai Shan.
Panda Pan Pan is oldest and respectful captive giant pandas in the world. Till 2016, she is already 36 years old equivalently 110 years old for human. Pan Pan was rescued by a farmer in 1984 in Sichuan when she was injured and stuck in a riverway. Then she was brought to Fuzhou Panda Research Center and lived there for many years until returned back to Sichuan. In 1987, Pan Pan visited American, and was liked by thousands of Americans. Pan Pan was also the prototype of the mascot of Asian Games 1990, and become a super star after the Games because she was very talented with playing games, such as cycling, shooting basketball, weightlifting, sliding, etc.

Currently, Pan Pan is retired, and enjoying his twilight years at Dujiangyan Panda Base. Let’s together wish her a forever happy living.
Tai Shan is another super star in panda family. He was born in Washington Zoo on July 9, 2005. He returned back to all panda’s hometown Sichuan on February 5, 2010, and then lived in Yaan Bifengxia Panda Base. Since 2014, Tai Shan has been living in Dujiangyan Panda Base. But you may don’t know that in the early period after Tai Shan came back to China, he had trouble with digestive system which cause him be thin and weak. The base conducted special care program to cure, which worked out very well. During past 6 years, the weight of Tai Shan has increased to 107kg from 90kg. The digestive system is now also very healthy. So Tai Shan was added to breeding plan of 2016. After several special training, Tai Shan was transferred to Bifengxia Base to mate with Wen Yu. And Tai Shan didn’t let us down. He finished the mating very successfully.
