Latest News: On May 11, 2016, the official opening ceremony of Zhonghua Giant Panda Enclosure was held in Sichuan Wonglong Nature Reserve. Before Wenchuan Strong Earthquake in 2008, Wolong used to be the largest base of Giant Panda with more than 70 pandas. The earquake caused tremendous damage to the base, and forced Wolong to move pandas to Bifengxia Panda Base. After nearly 8 years preparation and reconstruction with the sponsirship of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the new base open officially to public finally. In the future, the base will keep developing, and become an important center for breeding, reproduction, wildness trainings and scientific studies of giant pandas.
It has been nearly 9 years after the terrible earthquake 5.12 in 2017, 9 years of pain and sorrow but with hope. Located in Wenchuan County, the reserve was largely devastated by the earthquake. Most of pandas luckily survived and got rescued but their home, including panda enclosure, panda hospital, museum, kitchen, etc, were all destroyed. After the earthquake, the pandas were moved to Bifengxia Panda Base which is another branch base of China Panda Protection and Research Center.
But home is always home, and can be rebuilt after devastation. After several years of research, new plan of re construction was released. According to this plan, Geda Town in the Wolong Nature Reserve, covering areas Shenshuping, Dongkoucao and Huangcaoping, were chosen as the sitting for the new panda base which would consist of research center, breeding center and re-wild training center. The reconstruction was launched in 2009. After about 6 years efforts, the new panda base has completed in early months of 2016, and going to open for public in May or June according to official news.
Wolong Panda Base was opened in the second half of 2016. Now visit and panda volunteer work are available at this base.
