The chance of getting mountain sickness in a Jiuzhaigou - Huanglong trip is low. However the altitude of Huanglong Park is high above 3000m. And a possible overnight place by Chuanzhusi (3000m) is also not to be ignored.

Altitude of Jiuzhaigou Park

The highest point in Jiuzhaigou Park is by Long Lake at 3100m. Most part of your visit to Jiuzhaigou is between 2700m and 2200m. Normally one doesn’t even show any AMS while in Jiuzhaigou. The place where most of the hotels are is at 2000m. You don’t need to worry about getting mountain sickness while visiting Jiuzhaigou Park.

Altitude of Huanglong Park

The highest point of Huanglong Park is at 3600m. The base of Huanglong is at 3200m. There is a chance of showing AMS while visiting Huanglong. Although the normal way of visiting Huanglong is by using the cable car to go up to around 3550m and that is almost the highest point and then walk down the park to 3200m. If you are heart or lung problems then we don’t recommend you to visit Huanglong Park because it will involve walking (long or short) by such high altitude inevitably.

Huanglong Park is at between 3200m and 3600m

For people with less experience with high altitude travel, please avoid staying overnight by Chuanzhusi which is at 3000m and can make you feel uncomfortable especially when you stay at hotels that don’t have well heating rooms. Sleeping by Songpan is better than sleeping by Chuanzhusi if you want to avoid high altitude for overnight. You may read more on our website about how to make plans on a ground tour to Jiuzhaigou.

If you want to do a Jiuzhaigou Tour avoiding any high altitude place, then please skip Huanglong Park, and please be aware of the inevitable driving for around 50km above 3000m from Chuanzhusi to Gonggangling before you arrive in Jiuzhaigou. If you are flying to Jiuzhaigou, the airport is at 3500m and it’s also around 50km driving above 3000m before you go lower.

Gonggangling Road Pass is at 3400m

You may take the following precautions to cope with AMS: drink water, keep warm, do not stress yourself too much by walking slow, take medicine such as diamox, have good rest the former night.
