Total elevation gain is about 2000 meters and elevation loss is the same as going up and going down will follow the same trail. The hiking starts from the entrance of Haizi Valley, one of the three valleys of Mount Siguniang. Haizi Valley is the valley leads to eastern face of Mount Siguniang. Walking from Rilong to Dafeng Base Camp in one day is difficult. You will need to walk from 3000 meters to 4300 meters at Dafeng base camp for 13km usually for about 7-8 hours. The sheer elevation gain is substantial considering it is done in one day. However you can break this day’s walking into two days and have one night stay by the campsite at around 3700 meters. The walk from Base Camp to the Summit will need to walk from 4300m to the summit at 5025 meters and come back to base camp. The walking distance for the second day is about 7-8km, half ascent and half descent. And after worth it is another 12km back to Rilong from base camp.
Elevation of the walkings in Mount Siguniang is generally between 3000 meters and 5050 meters. Rilong is at the elevation of 3000 meters. Dajianbao is at 3800m, Laoniu Yuanzi is at 3700m, Dahaizi is at 3800m and Huahaizi is also at 3800m.
First time travelers to this place or even experienced travelers all have the risk of getting AMS due to change of altitude/Temperature and air pressure. Acclimatization is necessary and precautions are essential. Precautions for avoiding altitude sickness include the following tips.
Drink more water than you normally need everyday;
Keep your warm clothes handy to avoid getting cold due to elevation/temperature/pressure change;
Eat properly (no alcohol and be careful of local street food) and have enough time to sleep;
Do not stress yourself both physically and mentally;
A little physical preparation prior to traveling to high altitude places is necessary;
Prepare medication for AMS, cold and diaries.
If one didn't experience altitude sickness before, it means you are fit, it doesn't mean you won't get altitude sickness again. Keeping warm and keeping hydrated all the time are the two most essential things to do while traveling in Mount Siguniang. Please do keep in mind what you can normally do at home (if your home is at lower than 3000m) had better not to do here, for example, leaving your warm clothes/rainproof behind. Once you have a cold at such altitude, your holiday is basically over. People who have heart or lung problems are not recommended to hike in Mount Siguniang.
