Getting To/Around Tagong

This page is about the ways of transfers to get to Tagong and how to get around Tagong using public transfers. Included are public transport information of getting to Tagong from Chengdu, from Danba and getting around Tagong and Kangding.

From Chengdu to Tagong

From Chengdu to use public bus to Tagong one needs to get to Kangding first and then from Kangding use another bus to Tagong. There are plenty of buses departing to Kangding from Chengdu everyday at Xinnanmen Bus Station >>. At Kangding Bus Station you can catch minibus to Tagong although from 2019 the direct bus from Kangding to Tagong are sometimes replaces by two rides with one transit at Xinduqiao.

Another quick way to get to Tagong from Chengdu is to use flight. Flights are available everyday from Chengdu to Kangding Airport >>. Flight takes less than an hour. Read Details of Kangding Airport. Please note Kangding airport is located at Zheduoshan, a places that is with equivilent distance to Kangding and to Tagong. When you arrive at Kangding Airport you don't have to go to Kangding for transit, you can drive to Tagong directly. Although the only public bus that is available is to go to Kangding. To go to Tagong directly from the airport may need to hire a car in advance. Although gping to Kangding may give you a higher chance of good acclimatization of body, since these places are with high altitude at over 3000 meters. Tagong is at 3800m, Kangding is at only 2600m. So it still makes sense to drop down to Kangding first and then go to Tagong. Plus Kangding is also an interesting town to check out.

From Tagong going back to Chengdu, flying maybe a better option since it takes only 3-4 hours toal: 1 hour airport transfer, 1.5h checking in, 45 minutes flying time, another 30 minutes airport transfer. Although due to the newly-built motorway between Chengdu and Kangding, now that driving back from Tagong to Chengdu takes less than 6 hours. Using public transfer will need to transit at the same places and takes longer time than hiring a car.

From Kangding to Tagong

( There are three ways from Kangding to Tagong. A, Shared Taxi you find at outside of Kangding Bus Station that costs CNY100 per person. Departure time is flexible and many hostels may provide such service or know drivers who do this. B, There are no direct bus to Tagong. If to use the big public buses you need to buy tickets from Kangding to Dawu(Daofu) or Luhuo and get off at Tagong on halfway. These buses are the passenger buses. C, The most economy way is to use what we call the Countryside Bus that are minivans and minu buses. This way you need to use the small green minivans at next door of Kangding Bus Station that costs CNY25 per person, this green minivan starts from Kangding to Xinduqiao Zhen(????) that departs when a van is full basically you can go there from 7am everyday and you'll find this. And then from Xinduqiao at the same location there is green bus (below) from 08:30am to 06:00pm everyday from Xinduqiao to Tagong at every 70 miniutes and costs CNY10 per person.

From Tagong to Kangding

From Tagong going back to Kangding will also need a transit at Xinduqiao using public transport. The green buses leave Tagong at the monastery from 8.30am to 5.30pm at every 70 minutes. Ticket costs 10 yuan per person. You are recommended to arrive 30 minutes earlier at each schedule. And from Xinduqiao use the small green minivan that costs 25 yuan per person to Kangding. Morning usually has less traffic than afternoon.

From Kangding Airport to Tagong

The best way is to hire a car if you wish to go directly from the airport to Tagong. It will take you less than 1.5h and cost you around CNY300 or more. Please note the altitude is very high at the airport.

From Danba/Siguniang to Taogong

Often travelers are doing a circuit tour and will involve coming from/going to Danba or Mount Siguniang. From Mt. Siguniang to Tagong you go to Danba first, Read Details >>. Then from Danba you are recommended to hire a car so it's more direct way to get to Tagong although you can still use public bus but you have to break the transfer into two: go to Bamei first (often you need to purchase tickets for buses to Luhuo, Dawu/Daofu, Derge) and get off at Bamei. Then by Bamei wait for the bus that goes to Kangding and get off at Tagong. Note there may be buses available to Bamei directly. Going to Danba from Tagong is the same as going to.

Shared Taxi in Tagong

There are often drivers looking for business by Tagong Monastery by the bus stop. You can hire a car or share a car there. There cars are still reliable even though usually the drivers are not well-behaved and talk loud.
