Tagong(Lhagang) Travel Guide

Tagong, also named Lhagang, it is a very small town 115kms northwest to the town of Kangding in Gartse Prefecture. It is home to one of the most widely-worshiped Sakya sect monasteries called Tagong monastery. It has an elevation of 3720 meters above the sea level. There is only one 500 meters street goes across this town. At the end of this street is the Tagong monastery and Tagong Grassland. Tagong is an important place for the Tibetan Buddhism. Monastery and religion are fundamentally rooted in people's lives here.

Center of Kham Tibet

Tagong is a community of Tibetans. Tibetan dogs wander through the street where the Tibetan style houses stand one next to another with bright color decorations. People wear Tibetan clothes and speak Tibetan language. Cowboys come into town during business seasons selling yaks or cordyceps. Its authenticity is recognized by many visitors.

Tagong Grassland

Tagong is located 110 kms northwest to Kangding near the airport. It is rather a pasture of rolling land than a flat plain. Grassland and yaks, monasteries and Lamas, authentic Tibetan lifestyle can be witnessed on the pasture. Greens, clear sky and snow-capped Yala mountain sum up the natural highlights. Buddhist rituals at the beginning of each Lunar year and horse racing festivals during summer time attracts tons of people flowing in.

Tagong Monastery

Tagong monastery was built in 600s AD when princess Wencheng start her journey to Lhasa, earlier than many monasteries in Tibet. It is a widely-worshiped Sakya sect monastery across Kham. It has a taste of ancient Chinese style, located at the end of Tagong Xiang(Town).

Mount Yala and Tagong Grassland Hiking

If you look to do some hiking in Kangding, then this is the one. From Kangding to Mount Yala and the into Tagong, primitive, not spoiled and most importantly, it is beautiful. The hiking is in the valleys of primitive landscape and beautiful lakes and mountains. It ends in Tagong, a Buddhist town of Kham with stunning Buddhist constructions and interesting local Tibetan people. This is truly an adventure into the wild Sichuan.

Getting There and Around

You can go to Tagong by bus, by air or by private car. There are more than one scheduled flight from Chengdu to Kangding Airport each Day. From airport of Kangding it is only 1 hour's transit to Tagong. The bus from Chengdu however takes longer time, and you need to transfer from Kangding and sometimes Xinduqiao.

Go to Tagong By Bus

To use a bus to get to Tagong you go to Kangding first. The bus departs several shifts from Chengdu at Chengdu Xinnanmen Tourist Center every day. All the buses depart at Xinnanmen Bus Station are before 2 pm. The bus takes about 3-4 hours from Chengdu to Kangding. And from Kangding use the local minibus to get to Tagong for another 2-3 hours. Go to Tagong By Air

There is an airport in Kangding which has flights between Chengdu and Kangding. The flight schedules on every day from around April to November in the morning but sometimes it cancels due to bad weather. From the airport it is another 1-hour drive to the Tagong.more>>
